Getting a head start on his career in academia, Tyler Werland will graduate this May with his bachelor’s degree in management. A Distinguished Business Student and member of the Honors College, he participated in UTSA’s undergraduate research and creative inquiry showcase this spring highlighting work that he’d done on “Individualism-Collectivism and Bias Against Outgroup Members” with Associate Professor Huy Le .
Werland will enter the college’s M.S. in Data Analytics program this fall, and his long-term goal is earning his doctorate in organizational behavior/human resource management.
“All of the faculty I have worked with in the College of Business, especially in the Management Department and CSPD, have been incredible and played a significant role in my development,” said Werland. “Dr. Dina Krasikova is my favorite professor. She was a great instructor and has been a wonderful mentor to me.”
Active with student organizations as well, he served as chapter president of Alpha Chi Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Psi and Alpha Lambda Delta. He also was the founder and event organizer of UTSA’s St. Baldrick’s Day event, where faculty, staff and students shaved their heads and raised money to support childhood cancer research.
Werland’s advice for business students is to get out there. “Network, network, network. Don’t be intimidated. You can learn so much from others, and you never know the doors that can open up for you,” he said.
Building his own professional network, he completed three internships while at UTSA. He interned with Target, the Alamo and H-E-B. He also interned with the Honors College at UTSA.
“Being a Roadrunner is being prideful of my school and always striving for excellence while helping others along the way,” he said.
