The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business will host cyber security icon Michael Sikorski , the director of the FireEye Labs Advanced Reverse Engineering (FLARE) Team, for a lecture at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 3.
He will present “Want to Swipe Your Card? Think Again. A Point-of-Sale Malware Demonstration” in the H-E-B University Center Room 2.212.
The lecture, sponsored by the college’s Center for Education and Research in Information and Infrastructure Security, is free and open to the public.
“It is an honor to have a speaker of this caliber come to UTSA to talk to our students, faculty, industry and government partners,” said Nicole Beebe , the Melvin Lachman Distinguished Professor and associate professor of cyber security. “He is the foremost expert in the field and literally wrote the book on practical malware analysis. It shows the level of attention our cyber programs are garnering these days.”
The presentation will dissect real-world malware designed to steal credit card information and demonstrate how the information flowed through the compromised system and out the door to the attacker. Participants will learn what it is like to quickly triage malware and collect evidence from a digital crime scene.
Sikorski is the co-author of the preeminent book on malware reverse engineering, “Practical Malware Analysis.” He has also created and taught a series of malware analysis courses to groups such as the FBI, the National Security Agency and BlackHat.
An adjunct computer science faculty member at Columbia University, he has previously worked at the National Security Agency, the MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Mandiant. He is a graduate of the NSA’s three-year Systems and Network Interdisciplinary Program (SNIP), Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University.
