Dempsey Thornton

Dempsey Thornton With the same passion and energy that she showed on the court, UTSA women’s volleyball player Dempsey Thornton was driven academically as well. Majoring in sport, event and tourism management, Thornton graduated from UTSA last fall.

Thornton, a native of Corpus Christi, was a four-year volleyball starter and was voted captain for three years. She led the team to conference championships the past two years. The middle/outside hitter accumulated several honors including being named to the First Team All-Conference USA; the Conference USA All-Academic Team; and the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

“I was attracted to the SET major,” said Thornton, who was one of the 100 Best Students in the College of Business. “I learned a lot about the industry from my classes.”

Currently working on her MBA, she will also continue on as a Lady Roadrunner, but this time as part of the women’s basketball team.

“I played both volleyball and basketball in high school,” said Thornton. “Originally, I had planned on playing both sports at UTSA, but I decided to commit to one team.” Finishing her eligibility in volleyball this fall, the coaches asked her to finish out her career at UTSA playing basketball next year.

“Leadership is where my passion lies. The leadership skills that I developed through athletics are directly applicable in business,” she said. “I’m able to analyze situations better both on and off the court.”

Thornton will work this summer as a marketing intern for a nonprofit sports camp. Then, next spring she has already secured an internship with the CE Group, an event-based marketing firm in San Antonio.

“I’m excited to begin this new chapter in my life,” she said.
