India immersion participants in front of the Taj Mahal Getting out of their comfort zone, 16 UTSA business students visited India in January as part of the college’s international immersion program.

Students learned about India’s business, cultural and political environments through studies at the University of Hyderabad and had direct interactions with business leaders in pharmaceutical and technology businesses.

“India has the fastest growing economy in the world,” said Edgar Ibarra, a senior majoring in entrepreneurship. “All of the entrepreneurs and business owners we met had passion and drive. I was impressed by how well they treated their employees. The trip solidified what I’ve learned in the classroom and made me think about doing business in India.”

The two-week program was led by Lalatendu Misra, professor and chair of the Department of Finance, and Dennis López, academic director of international business programs.

“Academic components were diverse and relevant-–from talks with entrepreneurs from micro companies to visits with upper management professionals from large multinational companies,” said López.

At the end of the trip, the focus shifted to cultural enrichment. Visits included historical and cultural sites in Jaipur and Delhi as well as touring the Taj Mahal.

“It was a great experience,” said Ibarra, an international student from Mexico. “I made connections overseas, had fun with my peers and learned different points of view. I learned to be open minded in new situations.”
