Michael McDonald receives his award
The College of Business recognized the outstanding contributions of faculty and staff members during the annual Business Awards Ceremony held on May 1.
Three faculty retirees were honored for their service to the college. Faculty retirees were Gary Bridges , MBA ’76, senior lecturer in accounting; Ted Skekel , associate professor of accounting; and Daniel Tablada , lecturer II in marketing. Combined the retirees had more than 48 years of service at UTSA.
Eight faculty members were honored for excellence in the areas of teaching, research and service.
Long Liu , associate professor of economics, received the E. Lou Curry Teaching Excellence Award. The college’s premier teaching award, the E. Lou Curry Award is presented in memory of Lou Curry, a respected faculty member who passed away in 1995. Liu’s teaching goal is to ensure that students utilize their economic knowledge in their future endeavors.
Bruce Rudy , assistant professor of management, was named the recipient of the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Tenure-Track Faculty. Teaching at the undergraduate level, Rudy brings management strategy to life through activities, case studies and group presentations.
The recipient of the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty is Ed LuQuette , lecturer II in economics. LuQuette has a gift for teaching economics and makes economics interesting and intriguing for his students.
In the area of research excellence, Michael McDonald , associate professor of management, was named the Col. Jean Piccione and Lt. Col. Philip Piccione Endowed Research Award recipient. McDonald is an emerging leader in the field of executive leadership. He has eight publications—all of what have appeared in management’s elite journals—truly making his work top-tier.
David Han , assistant professor of statistics, was the recipient of the Dean’s Research Excellence Award for Tenure-Track Faculty. His core research areas have centered in statistical modeling, inferential analytics and operations research.
Recognizing a career of service to UTSA, Karen Williams , senior lecturer in information systems, received the Patrick J. Clynes Endowed College of Business Excellence in Service Award. Williams takes the service component of academia seriously, and she has an excellent track record of faculty service at the university, college and departmental levels.
David Silvera , associate professor of marketing, was named the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for University Service. He has developed an active service strategy that has focused on responsibilities related to research administration. He has served as chair or vice chair of the university’s Institutional Review Board since 2007.
The college’s Endowed 1969 Commemorative Faculty Award for Overall Faculty Excellence honors a faculty member for their accomplishments in teaching, research and service. The award was established to commemorate the founding year of the university. This year’s recipient is Sharad Asthana , professor of accounting. Asthana teaches undergraduate cost accounting and a doctoral seminar in contemporary accounting He is a leading accounting researcher, and his research interests include financial accounting, capital markets, auditing issues and pensions research. In recognition of his research acumen, he was recently named editor of the International Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Performance Measurement.
In addition to the faculty awards, two staff members were honored for their contributions to the college. Julio Perez , systems analyst III in Academic Computing, was a recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award. He is always willing to go the extra mile to resolve issues, and he responds quickly and efficiently to requests. His courteous behavior and pleasant demeanor make him an asset to the college.
The second Dean’s Excellence Award was presented to Rick White , systems analyst III in Academic Computing. White excels under pressure and always completes projects on time. He places the highest standard on himself and others within the department. He is a first-class supervisor, employee and steward for the college.
