jerry_deitchle BJ’s Restaurant Brewhouse announced a $ 50,000 scholarship commitment for business students enrolled in the Honors College at UTSA.

The scholarship effort was led by San Antonio native and UTSA College of Business alumnus Jerry Deitchle , MBA ’75, chairman, president and chief executive officer of BJ’s Restaurants, Inc., a national casual dining restaurant headquartered in California.

This unique scholarship will provide $2,500 per academic year in scholarship funding per student as well as allow recipients an opportunity to apply for a paid internship at an area BJ’s Restaurant. The internship will allow business students interested in pursuing careers in food service and restaurant management invaluable learning experience in the industry.

“We are proud that our alumnus Jerry Deitchle has stepped up to not only support academic achievement for our business students, but also to provide invaluable internship experience for our students in the fields of tourism and hospitality management,” said Lynda de la Viña , Dean of the College of Business. “Academic support and professional development are two areas which are vital for our students.”

The first UTSA BJ’s Restaurants Inc. Scholars will be selected next year and the scholarship may be renewed annually up to two years. The award is designated for UTSA Honors students who are actively pursuing a business degree with preference given to veterans. The nomination process will be administered by the Honors College. Criteria for selection include academic excellence, completion of 60 college credits and financial need. The deadline for applicants is Feb. 15, 2010.
