The College of Business recognized the outstanding contributions of faculty and staff members during an awards ceremony held on May 4.
Eleven faculty members were honored for excellence in the areas of teaching, research and service.
Keith Fairchild , associate professor of finance, received the E. Lou Curry Teaching Excellence Award. The college’s premier teaching award, the E. Lou Curry Award is presented in memory of Lou Curry, a respected faculty member who passed away in 1995. Fairchild’s passion for teaching, his relevant class material and his ability to challenge students were instrumental in his selection.
David Han , assistant professor of management science and statistics, was named the recipient of the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Tenure-Track Faculty. Han also received the President’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence. Han is known as a demanding teacher who motivates his students to succeed. Students note that he makes complex math easy to understand.
The Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty was presented to Mark Phillips , lecturer in management. Phillips is known for his exuberance, expansive knowledge in his field and the ability to combine theoretical knowledge with examples from the real world.
In the area of research excellence, Allen Zhang , associate professor of marketing, was named the Col. Jean Piccione and Lt. Col. Philip Piccione Endowed Research Award recipient. Zhang publishes in highly-respected journals and has had six first-authored, top-tier journal publications. His work is also cited by scholars from around the world.
Onur Bayar , assistant professor of finance, was the recipient of the Dean’s Research Excellence Award for Tenure-Track Faculty. Bayar’s research is focused in corporate finance and market microstructure.
Recognizing a career of service to UTSA, Elaine Sanders , associate professor of accounting, received the Patrick J. Clynes Service Award. Sanders provides exceptional service to the university, the college and her department. She was instrumental in creating the Principles of Accounting Competency Examination and has served as a Provost Fellow for two years helping to implement faculty policies.
Linda Vaello , lecturer in accounting, was named the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for University Service for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty. Linda has developed a longstanding partnership with the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health through participation in their San Antonio Ethics in Business awards program. Her work has resulted in UTSA being recognized throughout the community for its ethics program.
Ray Teske , assistant director of the Real Estate Finance and Development program and lecturer in management, was the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for Community Service. As advisor to the real estate students, he has implemented community serice activities into the program. And, he personally works with community organizations such as the Elf Louise program.
Highlighting the strategic importance of international issues, the college established the Dean’s Excellence Award for Advancing Globalization. This year’s recipient is Daniel Tablada , lecturer in marketing. Tablada pioneered the first college course taught in Spanish and leads the college’s Bilingual Business Certificate Program and the Border Business Course.
In a first for the college, two recipients were selected to receive the college’s Endowed 1969 Commemorative Faculty Award for Overall Faculty Excellence. This award honors a faculty member for their accomplishments in teaching, research and service.
The recipients were Tina Lowrey , professor of marketing, and Stewart Miller , associate professor of management. Lowrey is recognized as a prominent teacher and scholar in consumer behavior. Her work has been cited almost 300 times, and she has edited 5 books. She leads most of the committees that she serves on including chairing the Ph.D. committee while also serving as the Ph.D. advisor in marketing.
Miller is a solid teacher, scholarly researcher and a committed citizen to the college. He has an impressive research record in his field of international management, publishing in some of the most widely regarded management journals. Bringing notoriety to UTSA, he served as the co-chair of the Local Arrangements Committee for the Academy of Management conference held in San Antonio this year.
In addition to the faculty awards, five staff members were honored for their contributions to the college. Sandy Pottorff , senior administrative associate in the Dean’s Office, received a special award for her work in helping the college secure its AACSB reaccreditation. Sandy was instrumental in the reaccreditation process and helped develop a special form to validate faculty credentials.
April Lawver, director of academic advising, was a recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Award for professional staff. April leads the college’s advising office and has improved customer service and employee teamwork in this demanding area. She is committed to excellence in her work and partners with university administrators and department chairs to keep abreast of policy and curriculum changes.
The second Dean’s Excellence Award was presented to Judy Quiroz , senior administrative associate in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Technology Management. Quiroz created a seamless transition for her new department when it was established this fall. In addition she coordinates events and activities for the Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship. Her initiative and her willingness to go the extra mile make her an ideal recipient of this award.
The final staff award was presented to a team. The recipients were Laura Earleywine and Kim Kyle , senior administative associates in the Department of Economics and the Department of Management Science and Statistics. Their ability to work as a team and their willingness to help anyone regardless of their department affiliation is an exceptional accomplishment. They are both enthusiastic in their job and are eager to meet new challenges.
