UTSA alumnae and San Antonio business leaders shared their experiences in the workplace as part of a “Women in Business” panel held as part of the university’s Women’s History month celebrations in March.
Panelists were April Ancira , MBA ’03, vice president of Ancira Enterprises; Sara Dysart , MA ’77, attorney at law; Yvette Segura , vice president of claims service at USAA; and Yvonne Fernandez , ’85, assistant vice president of commercial services at Security Service Federal Credit Union.
Panelists discussed lessons that they’ve learned as women business leaders. They also shared with the students insights into leadership positions. “When you choose a career, you have to love what you do and look forward to each Monday,” said Segura. “I wanted to be in a leadership role that affected change.”
Workplace challenges were also a topic addressed by the panelists. “I entered the auto industry, which is predominantly male, at the age of 23,” said Ancira. “Coming in as a young female, I brought energy and enthusiasm into the organization. You are your own challenge.”
“You need a certain amount of self assurance to succeed,” said Dysart. “From a very early age, I knew that what drove me was a sense of independence. I am a risk taker. I’m not afraid to take risks, and that is why I thrive as an entrepreneur and business owner.”
Fernandez concluded the discussion by encouraging the students to learn from others and to find networking opportunities that allow you to grow as an individual. “Seek out mentors and other individuals who can help you in your career,” said Fernandez. “You do not need to forge ahead on your own.”
