Devin Gibson
Devin Gibson , a point guard on the Roadrunners men’s basketball team and a senior majoring in information systems in the College of Business, helped lead UTSA to its first NCAA tournament win this week versus Alabama State. The Roadrunners will face No. 1 overall seed Ohio State today in the second round of the tournament.
A star both on the court as well as in the classroom, Gibson has earned numerous honors this season. He was named the 2010 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year, first team Southland Conference selection, Most Valuable Player in the Southland Conference tournament, and first team All-District 23 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
“Devin masterfully balances the rigorous requirement of the classroom with the pressures of his athletic endeavors,” said Darrell Carpenter , a faculty member in the Department of Information Systems and Technology Management. “The communication, leadership and drive that he exhibits on the court are also present in the classroom.”
As the only senior on the team, Gibson assumed leadership of the team. Having broken numerous Roadrunner records, he ranks third all time in scoring and perhaps is best known regionally and nationally for his knack for steals. Four seasons ago, he became just the third freshman ever to lead the NCAA in steals per game with 3.3 (Jason Kidd was one of the other two), and he currently ranks in the top five nationally this season with more than three per outing.
“I just focus on making winning plays,” said Gibson, a native of Houston. “Everybody has their weak points but I’ve learned that it’s the people who work on their weaknesses that are the ones who rise to the top. I work pretty hard to balance everything.”
“Devin is the consummate point guard,” said Head Coach Brooks Thompson . “He’s like having another coach out on the floor. I expect a lot out of Devin, and he understands that. He has been a fantastic player for us since the moment he stepped foot on campus. Not only that, he’s been an outstanding student and role model.”
