Dr. Nandini Kannan , professor of management science and statistics, was elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation’s pre-eminent professional statistical society.
Kannan, one of 57 new fellows internationally, has been a champion for the statistics programs in the college through her administrative leadership, programmatic development and research accomplishments. She was instrumental in developing the college’s new Ph.D. program in applied statistics. And she has collaborated with researchers in applying statistical theory and methodology to solving real world problems. Some of her major research has been in the area of altitude decompression sickness.
She has maintained an impressive research record and has published more than 30 publications in refereed journals. Two articles appeared in top journals in 2008 and five articles were published in 2007. She also serves as an associate editor for Communications in Statistics and is a reviewer at more than 10 journals.
“The ASA fellows from academia, government and industry are outstanding individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to our profession in a variety of areas,” said Sally Morton, ASA president. “Their many achievements enhance our profession, and we are proud and pleased to recognize them as fellows.”
Individuals are nominated by fellow members and evaluated on their contributions to the advancement of statistics, publication records, job positions, activities within the association, membership and attainments in other societies, and other professional activities.
