The goal of the trip was to expand the students’ business mindset by connecting them with organizations to explore career opportunities and expand their professional development opportunities.
“This experience served as a powerful reminder of the importance of experiential learning opportunities,” said Genesis Valdez Noriega, assistant director of experiential learning. “Students benefit from these types of experiences because they broaden their perspective on career paths and reinforce the idea that a career is not always linear; it can take many different directions.”
Throughout the trek, students engaged in a series of immersive and impactful experiences including visits to CVS Health, the Massachusetts State House, Silicon Valley Bank, Harvard and Fenway Park.
At CVS Health, students were hosted by Jack Vann, MACY ’17, senior manager of enterprise strategy. They learned about CVS’ strategy and operations, gaining a deeper understanding of how large organizations align business functions to drive impact.
“The trek allowed me to broaden my perspective of the professional and real world — learning through people’s experiences and interacting with other like-minded peers,” said Daniela Gomez, a senior majoring in economics. “It was educational and fun, but it was also a great opportunity to grow personally and professionally.”
Students toured Harvard University and learned about their graduate programs. At Silicon Valley Bank, they attended a panel discussion to learn about the variety of career pathways within the financial industry. The trip concluded with a visit to Fenway Park, where they met with Kelsey Doherty, senior director of brand and social, to learn valuable insights into sports marketing.
“My favorite part of the Boston Business Trek was seeing how government and business work together to support and grow their local communities,” said Hudsyn Vasquez-Morales, a senior majoring in finance and management. “It was especially meaningful to connect with UT San Antonio alumni who are succeeding in the business world, as it gave me a clearer picture of what is possible after graduation. It helped me begin setting more intentional goals for myself and reinforced the importance of being proactive in pursuing opportunities.”
Experiential learning is the process of learning through doing. It involves hands-on, active engagement. The Boston Trek program is one of many opportunities available in the Alvarez College of Business that encourages students to apply their education through real world experiences such as internships, global programs and research experiences.
