Assistant Professor, Management
Stephen is an assistant professor of management in the Carlos Alvarez College of Business at The University of Texas at San Antonio. He originally joined UTSA as a part-time lecturer in 2019 and joined full time as a tenure-track faculty member after retiring from the Army in 2023. He has a Ph.D. in managerial science and applied economics with a focus in healthcare management from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School.
He is an organizational economist. His current research centers around workforce management and organizational performance with a specific focus on the role interpersonal relationships play in maximizing performance. He examines these questions in the context of healthcare – the largest industry in the U.S. economy.
He is also a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel with over 21 years of professional and leadership experience. Notably, he served as the chief financial officer of Brooke Army Medical Center, the Department of Defense’s largest hospital and a level one trauma center. Additionally, he held the position of chief financial officer for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the Department of Defense’s largest biomedical research laboratory. He is passionate about using this experience to inspire and educate the next generation of professionals.
