“Harnessing data from wearable sensors to inform behavioral intervention and public health research”

The increasing availability and sophistication of mobile health technology continue to generate promise for oncology care and research. Mobile health, or mHealth, technology comprises devices that enable wireless communication or data transmission. The most common devices are mobile phones and more recently smartphones and tablet computers, the latter of which can include sensors for activity, location, and biometrics. More recently, the commercial availability and consumer adoption of wearable devices and sensors has greatly increased. Wearable health devices enable personal health tracking over extended periods. These include physical activity monitoring as well as ambulatory tracking of medically relevant data, such as vital signs and biological markers. The availability of these types of data presents vast opportunities for understanding behavioral patterns and to link with health outcomes at a more personal level. This talk will present examples of data that can be obtained from mobile devices and wearable sensors, and how we might leverage these data to inform personalized interventions and address public health challenges.

Biography

Dr. Liao is an Assistant Professor of the Public Health Program in the Department of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Arlington. Liao's research interests include leveraging mobile technologies and wearable sensors to capture daily health behaviors such as physical activity, sedentary behavior, eating, and sleep, and to investigate the contextual and psychosocial determinants of those behaviors in our everyday life. Her current research focuses on the development of personalized interventions using data from wearable biosensors to promote physical activity in cancer survivors and racial minority women. Liao completed a competitive postdoctoral fellowship in colorectal cancer prevention at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center after receiving her Ph.D. in Health Behavior Research from the University of Southern California. She received her Master's in Public Health degree in Biostatistics from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and is certified in public health since 2010. Liao was the recipient of the Mentored Junior Faculty Fellowship in Cancer Prevention Research at MD Anderson and a fellow of the National Cancer Institute's Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer. Liao now directs the Physical Activity and Wearable Sensors (PAWS) research lab and Kourage Health, a community-based medical exercise program for cancer patients at UT Arlington.
