The Ph.D. in Management and Organization Studies examines the complex relationships among individuals, groups, organizations and market systems that must be managed effectively if organizations are to thrive in today’s rapidly-changing environment.¬†The program ensures that students have a solid conceptual foundation in the four primary areas of management: organizational behavior, human resource management, organization theory and strategic management. Students are required to develop in-depth expertise in one or more of these specialized areas. Students should expect to complete the program in four to five years (not including any leveling coursework that may be required).

Admissions Requirements

Must complete university-wide graduate requirements in addition to the following.

  • A completed application form
  • A statement of academic interests and goals
  • Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Official Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (no more than five years old)
  • Three recommendation letters
  • A current resume with employment or other experience
  • TOEFL or IELTS (international students)

Program Background 

The program is designed primarily to train individuals to become researchers and faculty members at universities where scholarship is critical. Students will develop the necessary expertise in research methods and statistics to enable them to investigate and understand organizational activities at multiple levels of analysis and to make substantial contributions to the developing body of knowledge. Doctoral program coursework requirements include foundation courses in business (this requirement may be met by a master’s degree in business or a business-related discipline); courses in statistics and research methodology; major area coursework; and electives. The college offers a doctoral seminar in teaching pedagogy to prepare students for their instructional responsibilities.


Management faculty are publishing in the very top journals in the field, including the Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Decision Sciences, Journal of Management, Organizational Behavior & Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management Studies, Personnel Psychology, Organizational Research Methods and many others.

Scholarships & Assistantships

Early application is strongly recommended to be considered for additional scholarships. Assistantships are generally available to doctoral students in good academic standing for a period of four years.

  • Assistantships pay $25,000 per year (20 hours a week)
  • Assistantship awards allow the student to be classified as “in state”
  • Tuition and fees are fully paid and waived for full-time students
