The Ph.D. in Marketing is designed to prepare individuals for careers in research. The program focuses on the use of experimental and secondary data research methods to address fundamental research problems in marketing. Students in the program possess high-intellectual capacity and motivation to pursue high-quality research. Students should expect to complete the program in four to five years (not including any leveling coursework that may be required).
Must complete university-wide graduate requirements in addition to the following.
- A completed application form
- A statement of academic interests and goals
- Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Official Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (no more than five years old)
- Three recommendation letters
- A current resume with employment or other experience
- TOEFL or IELTS (international students)
Annual application deadline is February 1.
To prepare doctoral candidates for cutting-edge research, they are exposed to a broad range of theory and methodology via rigorous coursework as well as one-on-one interaction and collaboration with the department’s highly active research faculty. Doctoral program coursework requirements include foundation courses in business (this requirement may be met by a master’s degree in business or a business-related discipline), courses in statistics and research methodology, major area coursework and free electives. Students typically complete coursework within two years and spend the remainder of the program working on a dissertation and other research projects.

Marketing doctoral program faculty are active researchers who frequently contribute to the top journals in marketing. Over the last several years, the department has been ranked one of the top marketing programs in terms of research productivity based on publication in the field’s top-tier journals (Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research and Marketing Science).

Please note that admission into the program is not a guarantee of financial support. Ph.D. students who are selected for funding typically receive a financial package for a period of up to four years.
