Understanding Graduate Programs

After completing a Bachelor’s Degree, often the next step is to complete a graduate program and obtain a Master’s Degree. However, it may be possible to move directly into a Ph.D. program.

UTSA College of Business Graduate Degrees

The UTSA College of Business offers a portfolio of graduate programs that are world-class. Our portfolio includes degrees with the highest marketability such as, Master of Science in Data Analytics, Master of Science in Statistics and Data Science, Masters of Science in Business, Master of Science in IT and Cyber Security, and variety of Master of Business Administration (MBA) options among others.

 

Master’s Program Doctoral Program
Definition Typically a master’s degree is focused in a particular area of study, whereas a bachelor’s degree includes a breadth of subjects.

In the College of Business, based on your master’s program, you may choose to complete your degree requirements entirely through coursework (course-based), or through a combination of coursework and writing a thesis (thesis-based).

A Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D. prepares people for research careers, either in academia or in industry.

Candidates who do not possess a master’s degree in a business or business-related discipline are required to complete a program consisting of a minimum of 84 semester credit hours.

Requirements to Complete Course-Based

  • Complete a program of coursework as indicated in the UTSA Graduate Catalog
  • Thesis credits may not be applied
Thesis-Based

  • Complete the required number of semester credit hours in coursework
  • Up to six semester credit hours may be for a thesis, which is a long scholarly paper to summarize the program
Doctoral

  • Complete required coursework
  • Pass a qualifying exam
  • Be admitted to candidacy
  • Complete a dissertation (an original contribution to scholarship)
  • Successfully defend, submit and publish dissertation
Maximum time to complete 6 years  8 years
