Joshua Flicker grew up in different cities across the world, including Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York, but the one thing that did not change was his love for science and computers. Flicker will graduate this May with his B.B.A. in cyber security and information systems.
For the past two years, he interned as a financial systems analyst at Rackspace, where he performed maintenance, setups and access control on financial software. He also worked with accounts payable, treasury and supply chain teams on finance and accounting projects.
“I credit the Center for Professional Development for pushing me to further my professional development,” said Flicker, who was active with the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization and the Association for Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting. “I would not have gotten my internship without the CSPD’s CAP program. I gained confidence to apply for internships and get my foot in the door.”
Upon graduation Flicker will begin his career at Microsoft as a premier field engineer, within the Microsoft Services division. As part of their 20,000-person department, he will work on complex projects using the latest technologies, platforms and tools.
Flicker credits his mentor at UTSA for providing interview assistance that helped him land the job. “Daniel Zucker showed me different techniques to use to tackle their interview process. His industry knowledge and Essentials of Technology Management class helped me a lot,” said Flicker.
Flicker’s favorite experience in the College of Business was his immersion trip to Italy, where he participated in the European Innovation Academy’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator, the world’s largest incubator start-up competition. He was tasked to work with four other teammates to create a product and business plan in three weeks, while learning from professors, venture capitalists and former start-up founders.
Although Flicker has already accomplished so much, he is still planning for his future. “In five years I see myself working at Microsoft and continuing my education by obtaining my MBA degree,” he said.
