Business Dean Named Recipient of Oppenheimer Achievement Award

Dr. Lynda de la Viña, dean and Peter Flawn Professor of Economics at the UTSA College of Business, was awarded the Jesse H. and Sue Oppenheimer Achievement Award last week at the Beyond the Glass Ceiling dinner sponsored by local law firm Oppenheimer, Blend, Harrison and Tate. The event was held to commemorate National Women’s History Month and to honor the accomplishments of San Antonio women.

De la Viña is the only female Hispanic business dean in the University of Texas System . She was the first Mexican-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in economics in the United States and the first Mexican-American woman at the secretarial level of the U.S. Treasury. She was recently named one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine.

The award is given to a woman of stature in San Antonio whose footprint within the community has helped to shape and enrich the lives of others, inspiring San Antonio women to create their own vision for success.

More than 100 women business leaders were in attendance. The event included a networking reception and a keynote address by Colleen Barrett, president of Southwest Airlines.
