August Busch III to Headline College of Business Signature Speaker Series Feb. 21
The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business will host their second annual Signature Speaker Series on Feb. 21 featuring August A. Busch III, former chairman of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. The Signature Speaker Series, presented by Wachovia, features a keynote address by Busch as well as an awards program honoring College of Business alumni. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in downtown San Antonio. All proceeds from the event will benefit student scholarships and programs in the College of Business.
“The Signature Speaker Series allows us to share with the San Antonio community an opportunity to hear from nationally recognized business leaders and to showcase the impact of the UTSA College of Business in South Texas,” said College of Business Dean Lynda de la Viña. “The college has received numerous national accolades this past year, and we are excited to use this opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of our alumni. We are also delighted that Wachovia shares our vision and has agreed to be the presenting sponsor of this event again this year.”
“It is an honor for Wachovia to continue our sponsorship of this great series, which allows those of us in San Antonio to learn from the experience and insight of top-ranked business leaders,” said Wachovia Market President Mark Metcalfe. “We are also proud to extend our relationship with the UTSA College of Business. The university’s contributions to academia, and to this city, are growing tremendously, thanks in large measure to the energy and creativity of Dean de la Viña and her faculty and staff.”
Busch began his career at Anheuser-Busch in 1957. He built his knowledge of the beer business by working in virtually every department throughout the brewery before succeeding his father as its president in 1974 and CEO in 1975. He was elected chairman of the board of directors in 1977. Busch retired from his position as president and CEO in July 2002 and continued to serve as chairman until December 2006. The company’s strong performance since that time has been attributed to Busch’s expertise in brewing, his marketing instincts, decisive leadership style and the strong management team he put in place.
Busch was educated at the University of Arizona and, as a brewmaster, at the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago. Busch and his wife, Ginny, reside in St. Louis. He has four children. Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. is a $17.3 billion St. Louis-based, global corporation that includes America’s largest brewing organization, one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of aluminum beverage containers and one of the largest theme park operations in the country.
Two distinguished alumni will also be honored at the event. Jeanie Wyatt, MBA’86, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of South Texas Money Management, Ltd., will receive the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. Wyatt established South Texas Money Management in 2000 and it has since become one of the fastest-growing investment advisory firms in the country focused on high-net-worth clients. A.J. Rodriguez, ’98 MBA’00, president and CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, is the recipient of the Young Alumnus of the Year award.
