Kyle Seale Leadership Scholars 2008-2009
For the second year in a row, UTSA’s College of Business sponsored nine students to attend the annual Adelante Leadership Institute’s Leadership Development conference in October 2009 in San Antonio. Students were selected competitively from a number of applicants. The UTSA student representatives joined fellow college students from other U.S. cities including San Diego, Chicago, New York, Arlington, El Paso, and Laredo.
Once chosen, the students attended the four-day event that focused on developing students to become active leaders in their communities, enhancing professional communications skills and improving the students’ ability to prepare for their new careers. Courses and lectures consisted of various keynote speakers from the business sector and an array of workshops aimed at developing leadership skills. Upon completing the conference and a post-event exercise, the students were named the 2009 Kyle Seale Leadership Scholars.
This year’s participants included, Paola Fiallos-Montalvo, Jennifer Langlinais, Cesar Lopez, Nora Ramirez, Olanrewaju (Larry) Reis, Erik Villarreal, Di Wu, Ashley Yong-Liy and Elaine Yong-Liy.
This year’s students expressed their excitement and eagerness to put into practice all they learned from the various workshops offered through the Leadership Development program. As Cesar Lopez explained, “our generation of students learns best by doing, by experiencing.” Various workshops included: Interview Skills, Résumé Review, Networking Skills, Leadership Development, Diversity in the Workplace, Community Leadership, Dress for Success and Presentation 101 as well as a strength assessment and a personalized 13-page personality evaluation.
Additionally, students benefited from the networking skills workshop and the numerous opportunities to put into practice those same skills throughout the four-day event. The students particularly enjoyed the Ropes Course, a physical agility exercise focused on team-building skills.
On December 8, 2009, the College of Business hosted the first official awards ceremony in recognition of the Kyle Seale Scholars.
Kyle Seale’s generous donation, supporting his strong belief in higher education, allowed the College of Business to sponsor select UTSA business students’ attendance at professional development conferences. The intimate setting allowed the Kyle Seale Scholars to share their experiences with Carolyn Seale, daughter of Kyle Seale, and Dean Lynda de la Viña.
