Business NewsCollege of Business Faculty Member Receives $74,000 Grant from NASA UTSA—July 6, 2004
This research grant will fund a collaborative effort between researchers at UTSA and the Challenger Learning Center (CLC) at Brooks City-Base. “The research team will leverage the assets of the CLC to develop an innovative hands-on learning program to impart project management skills, with a particular emphasis on techniques to recognize, elicit and apply team member expertise,” said Grant, who was also selected to serve as a fellow of the NASA Center for Program/Project Management Research. The CLC runs simulated space missions in a facility equipped with a mission control center and a space laboratory to increase interest in science and engineering among middle school students. The initial target audience for the learning programs to be developed through this grant will be young professionals employed by NASA who are candidates for future roles as project managers. This phase 1 effort, which runs from July 1 to January 2005, will set the stage for future research to advance knowledge and practice related to the effective management of expertise on project teams. Grant is the principal investigator of the project. Michael Bauman, assistant professor of psychology at UTSA, is co-investigator. The NASA grant program was established to provide access to research capabilities of the broader academic community to address significant problems in the discipline of project management. UTSA was one of eight institutions awarded grants to study this issue. The grants were competitive and awarded through a peer review process. Other institutions were Georgetown, MIT, Stevens Institute of Technology, University of California at Berkeley, University of Central Florida, the University of Colorado and the University of Southern California. UTSA’s College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
