Department of Information Systems Receives $80,000 from Cisco Systems to Research Securing College Networks

July 8, 2004

The Department of Information Systems in the UTSA College of Business received $80,000 in hardware from Cisco Systems, Inc. The hardware will be used to study how to effectively secure college network systems and for academic classes and projects.

Three issues that researchers will examine include effectively managing the flow of network traffic in a collegiate environment; protecting the collegiate environment against denial of service attacks; and preventing the collegiate environment from being used to launch denial of service attacks.

The equipment will be used to in the college’s infrastructure security computer lab and in the college’s networking lab. Researchers and students will test various equipment and capability combinations to determine which configuration is most secure.

“One added value of this award is that students will receive hands-on training in computer security,” said Glenn Dietrich, chairman of the Department of Information Systems. “Students will be able to design networks and then evaluate the systems for security vulnerabilities.”

Upon completion of the tests, the department will release their findings to CISCO for further research or independent analysis and verification.

“This project is just one example of how the College of Business is playing a vital role in protecting the national information infrastructure,” said Dietrich.

UTSA’s College of Business offers an infrastructure assurance concentration as part of the master of science degree in information technology and a bachelor’s of business administration degree in infrastructure assurance. The College of Business infrastructure assurance program was named a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education by the National Security Agency. This designation has been granted to only 59 programs in the nation and demonstrates a commitment to excellence in information assurance education.
