Business NewsAccounting Doctoral Students Receive Fellowships—July 26, 2004
Paul San Miguel received a fellowship from the Hispanic Leadership Program in Agriculture and Natural Resources at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The program is a collaborative effort between UTSA, the Agricultural Program of Texas A&M and the USDA. The goal of the program is to improve participation of Hispanic Americans in the assessment, design, delivery and evaluation of information, educational programs and economic development opportunities promoted by the USDA. Miguel will study the effectiveness of tax credits and their impact on the environment. “More companies are releasing financial statements listing potential liabilities associated with some action impacting the environment,” said Miguel. “Typically these disclosures don’t take into account all the impacts to the environment.” The three-year fellowship includes a paid research stipend, an opportunity to conduct research, engage in leadership development activities and develop policy analysis skills. Miguel and Katherine Lopez also received a fellowship from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. These competitive fellowships enable more minorities to enter and move ahead in the accounting profession and to increase the number of CPA role models who can positively influence the career decisions of college students.
