Business NewsCollege of Business Advisory Council Award Recipients Named—November 21, 2003
Four College of Business faculty members were recognized for their excellence in the fields of research, service and teaching at the College of Business Advisory Council Faculty Awards dinner last week. The college's premiere teaching award, the E. Lou Curry Teaching Excellence Award, was presented to Rick Utecht, associate professor of marketing. The E. Lou Curry Award is presented in memory of Lou Curry, a respected faculty member in the college, who passed away in 1995. After 22 years of teaching, Utecht still considers teaching to be personally rewarding. He has implemented a system so that he can memorize all of his students' names, even in classes of 300 students. He is a member of the College of Business Teaching Effectiveness Committee and serves on the advisory council for the university's Teaching and Learning Center. Kefeng Xu, assistant professor of management science and statistics, was the recipient of the Col. Jean Migliorino and Lt. Col. Philip Piccione Endowed Research Award. Xu's research publications are focused on logistics and supply chain management. During the past three years, he has published eight articles in high quality refereed journals. His research is also well received by his peers. For the past two years Xu has had the most requested article in Transportation Research. The recipient of the Patrick J. Clynes Service Award was Russell Briner, professor of accounting. Teaching at UTSA since 1988, Briner has excelled not only in the classroom, but also in his service to the university community. He has served on most of the major university and college committees. Most recently, Briner has chaired the college's Executive Committee for the past two years. He also completed a term on the Institute of Management Accountants Committee on Students at the national level. Nandini Kannan, associate professor of management science and statistics, was named the recipient of the Endowed 1969 Commemorative Faculty Award for Overall Faculty Excellence. She has established an impressive record of excellence in the classroom and teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her research interests include statistical signal processing, reliability and life-testing experiments and modeling decompression sickness using survival analysis. She serves on the advisory committee on continuing education for the American Statistical Association and is president of the San Antonio chapter. The Advisory Council Awards were established in 1988 by the college's Advisory Council to reward excellence in teaching, research and service. A selection committee reviews nominations and makes final selections. Please send your comments to: wendy.frost@utsa.edu ____________________________________________________________________ |
