College Hosts Statistics Career Day for Area Students

October 21, 2002

Statistics Career DayEncouraging students to think about statistics as a career field was the goal behind the first Statistics Career Day held last week at UTSA. The event, which was sponsored by the Department of Management Science and Statistics and the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association, brought 125 students to campus from local high schools and community colleges.

Speakers for the event included Robert Mason, president of the American Statistical Association and institute analyst at Southwest Research Institute; Catherine Taylor, a corporate representative from USAA; Woody Hinkel from the San Antonio Missions; Ken Williams from the University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center; and Ram Tripathi, professor of statistics at UTSA.

Michael Anderson, lecturer in management science and statistics, wrote a proposal for the event that was submitted by the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association.
The chapter was awarded $500 to conduct this event.

“This was a wonderful recruiting tool for our programs,” said Nandini Kannan, associate professor of management science and statistics and organizer of the event. “It also allowed us to showcase our new degree programs in this field. We plan on following up by visiting area high schools and talking to even more students.”
