One of the nation's most recognizable personalities, Oreck captivated an overflow crowd of students, university personnel and community leaders during his hour-long presentation. He discussed building a brand, identifying a niche market, the future of domestic corporations and the World Trade Center attacks. Oreck, 78, established his company in 1963 by selling lightweight vacuum cleaners to the hotel industry. His concept was to design a lightweight yet powerful vacuum for hotel workers. Oreck products are now sold to consumers and businesses throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. He has been the company's chief spokesman for five decades and credits the success of his company to his personalized advertising campaign. His presentation was punctuated with both laughter and tears. He showed highlight footage from his various advertising campaigns, including a memorable TV commercial showing a maid holding a bowling ball, suctioned by an Oreck vacuum cleaner, above his head. He also stressed the value of picking something that you can do well and marketing that concept. for Oreck Corporation, their marketing strategy revolved around their durable, but lightweight vacuum cleaner. The Frost Bank Distinguished Lecture Series brings prominent business and community leaders to UTSA to share their knowledge and experiences with students and others in the university and business community.
