Dr. Bennie Wilson (middle), Assistant Dean College of Business.
and Mike Martin, senior human resources manager, enlightened a class of business students with their tips for succeeding in business.

According to Helmerci, the first step to achieving business success is setting a career goal. Once a goal has been set, then students should gain experience in that field either as an intern or as an employee.

"Even if you are an employee at a fast food restaurant, a true business leader will learn from that experience," said Helmerci. "I hired one employee because he told me how he improved the order delivery system at a restaurant while he was working as a waiter."

Helmerci encouraged students to start reading business publications and to find a mentor. "Pattern yourself after someone who is successful and learn from that person's experiences," he said.

Helmerci also provided insights into their job selection processes. At their company, soft skills are sometimes more important than just a high grade point average.

Martin offered several tips for students to execute a successful interview. First, he encouraged students to know something about the company. Also, the candidate should be enthusiastic and hungry to take on the job. Finally, job candidates should be prepared to ask a few questions that reflect the key points of the interview.

"The only person that you are competing with is yourself," said Helmerci. "Your drive and determination are the keys to your success in business."

Philip Morris partners with the College of Business to provide scholarships for business students and hire interns and graduates from the college.
