College of Business Programming

June 25, 2002

A roundtable discussions at last weeks college's entrepreneurship program.College of Business Dean Bruce Bublitz and Dennis Duchon, chair of the Management Department, initiated a series of roundtable discussions last week to plan the college's entrepreneurship program.

"We hope to harness the practical experience and wisdom of local entrepreneurs to help UTSA define, shape and deliver a program that will lead to entrepreneurial success in the real world," said Bublitz.

The college currently offers a concentration in Small Business and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management.

"Entrepreneurship is a way of thinking that requires knowledge, skills, experience and motivation," said Duchon, who will be teaching a new entrepreneurship course next spring. "We need to create a program of academic rigor that will also draw on the experience of successful entrepreneurs."

Sam Barshop, chairman of the board of Barshop & Oles Company, Inc., outlined his approach to teaching entrepreneurship. Barshop holds the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Chair in Entrepreneurship Studies at Southwest Texas State University and teaches an entrepreneurship course to upper-level students. "Keep it simple," Barshop said. "I bring in successful local entrepreneurs and let them tell their life stories. It's amazing what students learn from these presentations."

Entrepreneurs were challenged to assist the college in this endeavor by giving guest lectures, reviewing student business plans, providing internship opportunities and mentoring students.

Participants in this discussion were James Allen, president of J. Allen Family Partners, Ltd.; Charles Bagby, CEO of Maid Brigade; Ben Barker, technology sector of Ehrenberg Chesler Investment Bankers; David Garza, CEO of Trinity Millennium Group, Inc.; Lissa Martinez, private investor; William Morrow, CEO of Grande Communications; Matthew Reedy, chairman of Intellisolve Group, Inc.; Luke Robinson, CEO of E.P.S.M.; and Lee Sutterfield, president of SecureLogix Corporation.
