Business NewsSecond Class of MBA Fellows from China to Receive American Business Certificates—May 4, 2001 The second class of MBA fellows in Liu's Family Foundation U.S.-China Business Education Initiative will receive certificates in American Business during ceremonies today in the University Room. The class featured nine students and one faculty scholar. Yang Dehua, the visiting scholar, is an associate professor in the School of Economics and Management at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. The MBA Fellows are Cheng Guoping (Penny); He Qindong (Henry); Li Jinlin (Kim Lee); Wu Chenyin (Aurora); Wu Jiahong (Emmy); Wu Wanlin (Sherry); Xu Wen (Alvin); Yan Haiyun (Barbara); and Zhang Jian Gong (Eugene). The students took nine hours of graduate courses, ranging in subject matter from finance, information systems, marketing and management. Additionally, all participants attended cultural classes two days a week to learn more about American culture. In spite of this demanding workload, the group enjoyed a wide range of cultural activities. Favorites included visits to the Rodeo and a Spurs game. They also visited area businesses Bromley Communications and OrbisOnline, an Internet auction site. While the fellows noted missing their families and authentic Chinese food, they enjoyed the green grass, fresh air and the hospitality of Joel Saegert and his family, who hosted the students for dinner. Program founder Richard Liu, owner and CEO of Superior Leather Limited of Hong Kong, will attend the certificate presentations and will visit with the fellows and College members this weekend. "The generosity of Richard Liu has allowed us to pursue this innovative international collaboration," said Dean Bruce Bublitz. "His gift supports student and faculty exchanges, research and joint programs between UTSA and top universities in China. We also look forward to sending UTSA faculty and students to teach and study in China." "I've traveled to many countries, but this experience was unforgettable," said fellow Xu Wen. "I'll treasure these experiences all my life. I've gained the confidence in my academic ability to allow me to continue my academic life." The next class of 10 MBA Fellows will arrive starting with the 2001-2002 academic year in August.
