East Asian Specialist Joins the Business College

Clyde D. Stoltenberg - Director of East Asian Studies and Professor of Business LawClyde D. Stoltenberg will join the UTSA College of Business as Director of East Asian Studies and Professor of Business Law this coming fall.

"The East Asian position is new," commented Donde Ashmos, chair of the search committee. "Stoltenberg brings a wealth of academic experience to our college in both East Asian Studies and Law. He speaks Mandarin, has established study programs, secured grants, conducted research and teaches with a focus on East Asian Studies. We are excited for him to join our faculty and bring such a wealth of knowledge and experience with him as we build programs in China and other areas in East Asia."

"We will look to Stoltenberg to lead our efforts in developing an East Asian business studies program at the undergraduate, graduate and executive education levels," commented Bruce Bublitz, Dean of the College. "I will be working closely with Clyde to raise external funding and grants related to studying East Asian business practices. His experience and knowledge in that area is critical to the future of our programs."

The position also calls on the Director to work with the business community, the Center for Professional Excellence, and other areas of UTSA to promote studies of East Asian business practices.

Stoltenberg comes to UTSA from the University of Kansas where he holds a current appointed as Professor of Business Law, and Co-Director of the Center for International Business and KU CIBER (Center for International Business and Economic Research).

CIBERs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, with additional support provided by each CIBER institution. Institutions with a CIBER center are part of a nationwide network of institutions selected for the strength of their international programs. There are currently 28 CIBERs across the U.S. providing services and programs to help American business excel in the global marketplace.

Stoltenberg earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, his M.I.A. from Columbia University School of International Affairs where he was the Lydia C. Roberts Fellow, 1982?83 with Specializations in East Asian Studies (emphasizing China) and International Law and Organization and his B.A. from the University of Iowa.

His teaching interests include; legal & social environment of business, commercial law, law of international business transactions, trade law and Chinese law. In Asia, he has taught and/or conducted research at National Taiwan University, Korea University, Nankai University (in Tianjin, PRC), and the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include legal and ethical issues in trade and investment in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; intra-regional trade and investment issues in East and Southeast Asia; regulation of R&D joint ventures and international accounting standards harmonization.
