Keating Selected to National Curriculum Policy Workshop: "What Mathematics Do Business Students Need?"

Oct. 4, 2000

Dr. Jerome Keating Dr. Jerome Keating, Professor in the Division of Management and Marketing has been selected to participate in the upcoming "What Mathematics Do Business Students Need? A Curriculum Policy Workshop."

The Mathematical Association of America and the Department of Mathematics and the Eller College of Business and Public Administration are the sponsors of this conference in October at the University of Arizona. Participant airfare and accommodations are covered through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Keating is one of only 30 participants selected from among nominations submitted by the deans of AACSB accredited business schools. "He is uniquely qualified to serve," commented Dean Bubltiz, "he will be a valuable participant."

Our College has, over the past several years, worked extensively with our University's department of mathematics and statistics and developed a unique relationship of cooperation. Dr. Keating, who came to our business college from the mathematics and statistics department, served the 1999-2000 academic year as Interim Director of our Division of Management and Marketing.

Other expertise that make Dr. Keating a good candidate include:

  • Knowledge of and participation in the reform calculus movement. And, in turn, the effect that movement has had on the study of calculus in business curriculum.
  • Involvement with collateral discussions between our Business School and our Math Department. Issues revolved around determining the best way to integrate and customize the elements business students need to optimize the time used in class and address the greatest number of topics.
  • Our current initiative involves the use of software that will make these calculus methods accessible to the business students, allowing them to address complex issues without the more intricate mathematical details.

In addition, Dr. Keating is editor of STATS: The Magazine for Students of Statistics. As editor he solicits input from students and scholars on pertinent interdisciplinary issues relating to applied math and statistics. This vehicle is used to disseminate those findings to a broader audience.
