Business NewsLabor Relations Students Engage in Mock Arbitration Exercise—Nov. 10, 2000 One of the reasons our Human Resource Management program is so highly recognized is the exhaustive detail professors pursue to prepare students to become top HR professionals. For 25 years Gary Raffaele has required the students in his labor relations class to present mock arbitration exercises. November 15th at 11:00 a.m. will be the first of four sessions scheduled this semester. This exercise involves a complete presentation of actual arbitration cases that the professor has heard. The students have to find and develop all of the relevant materials and play all of the various roles; such as the grievant, union and company officials, and spokesperson at the hearing, based on the information they have been able to gather. In addition, students who are not presenting on that particular day sit as arbitrators and will write a full decision following the hearing. Thus every student will experience the complete process; preparation and presentation of a case, as well as the experience of writing a full arbitration decision solely based upon the material presented at the hearing. "This is even more relevant today than it used to be," commented Raffaele, "many employers are requiring employees to sign mandatory arbitration agreements to avoid possible EEO and other individual lawsuits." "UTSA human resource majors placed first in the nation for the most students passing the Human Resource Certification Exam than any other school in the nation three out of the past five years," commented Bruce Bubltiz, Dean of the College of Business. "All of these efforts add up to UTSA providing real leaders for the Human Resource profession. Our HR faculty are to be commended for providing the rigor required for our students to achieve these levels of accomplishment." The associated student organization has a long history of Superior Merit Awards from the National Society for Human Resource Management and has ranked as one of the top five student organizations several years. This summer they won the Regional HR Games and made the finals in the national competition. The three other mock arbitration sessions will be held November 16th at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. and November 21st at 7 p.m. All sessions will be in the UTSA Science Building, Room 2.02.02.
