Business Student Interns with City of San Antonio:
Intergovernmental Relations Department

Nov. 30, 2000

Manuel Maltos graduated with a B.A. in Political Science in August of 2000, but this native of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico was not yet ready to leave UTSA or San Antonio. He is now working to finish a B.A. in Economics along with fulfilling his education hours for teacher certification.

Maltos has recently been selected to intern in the San Antonio Office of Intergovernmental Relations. As an intern, he will provide support to the staff by reviewing legislation, preparing summaries, and compiling information from city departments and/or outside agencies.

"As a student of political science and economics this is a great opportunity to apply my academic skills and enhance my knowledge of legislative implications on city operations, "commented Maltos.

Albert Carrisalez, Assistant to the President for External Affairs at UTSA and business alumnus, (B.B.A. ยด92) knows the value of an intern experience. His internship with the Greater Chamber of Commerce opened doors into governmental affairs, which ultimately led to a permanent position with the Chamber and established a professional foundation for his current position at UTSA.

"I recently learned about this City internship from my counterpart, Jim Campbell (Director of Inter Governmental Relations at the City)," commented Carrisalez. Because of UTSA's growing partnership with the City of San Antonio, Carrisalez was determined to help the City find, not just a student, but a UTSA student for this high profile internship. He found and encouraged Maltos to pursue the internship.

Internships are one of the best ways to help our students gain confidence in the workplace before they graduate. It gives them an opportunity to meet professionals who could influence their future careers. Internships also confirm the real-world application of their chosen fields of study. In this case a business alumnus served as a mentor to a current business student and UTSA has again found an opportunity to solidify their partnership with the San Antonio Community.
