First Chinese Group Sponsored by the Liu Program Arrives

August 28, 2000

China Students at EZ'sEight graduate students and one scholar arrived safely from China last week. Yi Jia (Jackie) is the only student from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Four other students are from Renmin University in Beijing; Hong Liu, Yajun Si, Yidong Wang and Lingjing Zhan. The final four, including our scholar, are from University of International Business & Economics, also in Beijing. They include Xin Liu (Cindy), Ermin Wu, Fang Zheng (Helen) and our scholar, Yang Zhao.

Most of our students are professionals pursuing their graduate degrees, so they fit right in to our graduate student demographic.

Kyle Snyder, our program coordinator has done a great job in organizing their first week and they've settled in nicely at the Oaks Apartments. Here's their agenda so far:

Their flight arrived in S.A. early Friday morning (12:12 a.m.) and after a few hours rest they had their first American restaurant experience at EZ's (a known UTSA hangout for faculty, staff and students alike). Shopping and long-distance phone cards were the next items on the agenda. We all know you haven't shopped until you've been to Walmart and HEB. That was plenty for day one.

Monday they had their International Student Orientation hosted by UTSA for all international students, which included applying for a SS# necessary for banking. Tuesday they worked with our Graduate Advisor, Ms. Katherine Pope, to review the program and select their courses. In addition to their scheduled cultural activities, they are enrolling in 12 hours of graduate work and did so Wednesday. After enrolling in their courses they were off to the Student ID office and then to their last stop of the day, UTSA Bookstore.

Thursday they had an Off Campus Orientation sponsored by The UTSA Multicultural Programs Office. This orientation is designed to help guide foreign students through a number of situations they will routinely encounter while living in the U.S. Later that evening they joined other newly admitted business graduate students for the College Graduate Student Orientation hosted by our Office of Graduate Studies and Research.

Friday they met with Ms. Marilyn Bellows, their Culture Course instructor, for orientation. This course supplements their weekly cultural excursions on Tuesday afternoons. And finally, they had all the necessary documents to open their bank accounts on Friday afternoon. Congratulations again to all the faculty and staff involved in our first China Initiative Program. Everything seems to be running smoothly so far. We'll keep you posted on their progress.
