October 9, 2008

"Ethical Leadership in a Global Environment" is the theme for the Business Ethics Symposium hosted by the UTSA College of Business. The symposium will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 and is free and open to the public.

The daylong program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:15 p.m. All lectures will be held in the Richard S. Liu Auditorium (2.01.02) in the Business Building on the 1604 Campus.

Rev. David Schilling, director of contract supplier systems for the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility, will discuss “Social Values, Investment Decisions and Corporate Responsibility” at 9:30 a.m. Schilling has worked for 14 years on a range of global corporate accountability issues including human rights and labor rights in the Maquiladora sector in Mexico and Central America; and the apparel, footwear, toy and electronic industries in Asia and China.

At 11 a.m. Dr. Andrew Gustafson, associate professor of business ethics at Creighton University, will present “The Ethics of Global Business.” Gustafson's research focuses on how businesses foster particular values and views of reality through advertising and marketing as well as on the ways in which business culture develops within corporations.

The symposium will conclude at 2 p.m. with a panel discussion, “The Practice of Corporate Ethics in the Global Marketplace.” The panel will include prominent San Antonio business leaders Kathleen Acock, president of Alpha Building Corporation; Earnie Broughton, executive director and ethics program coordinator at USAA; Al Silva, general manager and COO, Labatt Food Service; and Tim Swan, chief executive officer of the general partner, Metropolitan Contracting Company.

The symposium is co-sponsored by the Provost Office and the UTSA Methodist Student Movement. The event allows students, faculty, business and community leaders to engage in an ongoing dialogue about the practice of business ethics and the role of moral wisdom for corporate social responsibility.
