College Adds Construction Science and Management Graduate Degree

August 27, 2008

A new master of science degree in construction science and management has been approved in the College of Business. Prospective students can apply now to enter the program in spring 2009.

The 33-hour degree program is a collaborative effort between the College of Business and the College of Architecture at UTSA. The program will focus on the managerial aspects of the real estate finance and development industry and will complement the technical side of the undergraduate construction science program offered through architecture. Offered in a flexible format to accommodate individuals who are working, the new degree program is one of only five graduate construction science programs in Texas housed in a business school.

Coursework covers such topics as advanced construction management, real estate finance, real estate investment, real estate development, modeling of financial decision making, international practice, and construction practice in a global setting,

In collaboration with the San Antonio real estate community, students in the program have the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in conjunction with their academic preparation through guest lectures, internships, mentorships and participation in industry activities year-round. The program is advised by a Founders Council and an Advisory Board of industry representatives who work directly with the college to enrich the program.

The College of Business also offers a bachelor's degree in real estate finance and development, an MBA concentration in real estate finance and a master's degree in finance with a real estate finance concentration.

The real estate development, home building and construction industry employs more than 131,000 individuals in San Antonio. It has an economic impact of $19.4 billion each year, second only to the health care industry as an economic generator. Statewide, more than 784,000 individuals are employed in the industry.
