Deputy Director of U.S. Bureau of the Census to Speak Jan. 20 at the UTSA College of Business

Hermann Habermann, deputy director and chief operating officer of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, will present a seminar
on “Ethics, Confidentiality and Data Dissemination,” at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 in Room 4.03.12 of the John
Peace Library Building at UTSA. The seminar is free and open to the public.
He will discuss the role of statistical agencies to protect the data the participants provide and their obligation to
disseminate this data. He will utilize examples from the recent dissemination of small area data on the Arab population and
the relocation of Japanese Americans during World War II.
Habermann is a member of the International Statistical Institute, a fellow of the American Statistical Association and
serves on the board of directors of the Center for Internet Security. He previously worked as director of the United Nations
Statistics Division.
He has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Pratt Institute, a master's degree in mathematics from Adelphi University
and a doctorate in statistics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
