Cheryl Linthicum, associate professor of accounting, was named an Academic Accounting Fellow in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Office of the Chief Accountant. Her term in the Washington, D.C. office began August 2005 and will last one year.

Linthicum teaches financial and international accounting to undergraduates, doctoral students and executives. Her research interests have been focused on international accounting issues, including the application of International Financial Reporting Standards. She serves as associate editor for the Journal of International Accounting Research.

Linthicum was introduced to this opportunity by Walter Schuetze, a friend of the College of Business and former chairman of the SEC. "I'll be working with the international deputy chief," said Linthicum who has taught at UTSA for 12 years. "European companies will be filing with the SEC for the first time this year. It is an exciting time to be at the SEC, and it folds in nicely to my international research stream."

Fellows serve as a research resource for the SEC staff by interpreting and communicating research materials as they relate to various areas of interest. They are also assigned to ongoing projects.

"I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty and putting into practice what I've been teaching," she said. "I'll be able to make a lot of contacts that will be beneficial to the college, my research and our students."

The mission of the Securities and Exchange Commission it to protect the investing public. The SEC maintains investor confidence by requiring companies to disclose certain kinds of financial information.
