College Establishes New Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship

Creating and nurturing new technology entrepreneurs is the goal of The Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (CITE), a new interdisciplinary center in the College of Business and the College of Engineering.

The CITE will create a pipeline for UTSA faculty, students and the surrounding business community to develop new technology ventures. "One of our goals for the center is to help unlock the entrepreneur in both faculty and students through education and experiential activities," said Dr. Cory Hallam, director of the center. Hallam holds a doctorate and master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in engineering and technology management and policy.

During its initial start-up period, the center has conducted innovative student projects that partner undergraduate engineering students with business graduate students in the Management of Technology program.

In one project, engineering students designed a mechanically augmented and ergonomic laryngoscope, a medical instrument used for intubations. Partnering with a business graduate student, they developed a prototype for their device, created a working business plan and applied for a patent.

"These projects give students hands-on experience as early stage entrepreneurs, bring in additional revenue for the UT System through technology licensing and lend prestige to the university's efforts in entrepreneurism," said Hallam.

In addition to work with students and faculty members, the center is also poised to provide education and training activities for the entrepreneurship community. The center has hosted two technology boot camps for external audiences.

Most recently the center received a $40,000 grant from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance to support programming in this area. This semester teams of business entrepreneurship and engineering students are partnering for a New Technology Venture Start-up Competition. The top three teams will win cash prizes, get the opportunity to pitch their idea to a venture panel, and ultimately receive the opportunity to launch their company.

"CITE is committed to growing and nurturing a new generation of technology entrepreneurs," said Hallam.
