Department of Economics

Message from the Chair

Kenneth WeiherWe in the Department of Economics wish to welcome you back for another semester at UTSA.  You will see some new faces in the department, and I want to introduce them to you.

Welcome, Dr. Edgar Ghossoub!  The Department of Economics is very pleased to announce the addition of another fine member to the faculty.  Dr. Edgar Ghossoub joins our department as an assistant professor and a specialist in macroeconomics.  Dr. Ghossoub received his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky just last May 2007.  He already has co-authored with Robert Reed "Money and Specialization in a Neoclassical Growth Model," which was published in the Journal of Money Credit and Banking in 2005. Edgar and his wife, Maya, moved to San Antonio this summer.  They hope it rains this much all the time.

The hiring of Dr. Ghossoub is the third major addition to the Department of Economics in the last three years.  With the additions Dr. Melody Lo (financial economics) last year, and Dr. Hamid Beladi (international trade) in 2005, the department has added three extremely active and dynamic researchers who have significantly enhanced the research stature of an already productive group.  Moreover, all three are excellent teachers at all levels, from introductory courses up to doctoral courses.   In addition, Dr. Beladi is the editor of The International Review of Economics and Finance and Frontiers of Economics and Globalization. The editorial office of the journal is now housed in the College of Business at UTSA.  Its Web site can be found at:
http://business.utsa.edu/iref/.  Dr. Beladi is also the co-editor of Frontiers of Economics and Globalization, also from Elsevier Press: http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/bookdescription.cws_home/BS_1575/description#description.

As a sign of the maturation of the Department of Economics, four recent graduates of the department’s Master of Arts in Economics program are regularly teaching introductory courses for the department.  They are Emmanuel Alanis-Hernandez, Edmund Luquette III, Scott Metzger, and John Rightmyer.

Finally, the department has a visitor from China with us for the second year.  Wenjuan Guo will be performing the dual role of an instructor of Chinese to UTSA students and an economics instructor.  Ms. Guo will offer an economics elective course each semester on the Chinese economy.
