Department of EconomicsECO NewsAttention all graduate and undergraduate economics majors. Keep an eye on this Web site for announcements and news from the Department of Economics. Apply for TA and RA positions Openings are available for economics graduate students to work as teaching assistants and/or research assistants during the fall semester. TA’s and RA’s typically work 20 hours a week, for $10 an hour and earn the privilege of paying in-state tuition. Come to the department office (BB 4.01.10) to apply. Changes in the MA Program At the graduate level, there is a new catalog this fall. The MA program will have a new set of four required courses. They are Micro (6013), Macro (6033), Econometrics (6103) and Mathematical Economics (6113). Of those, 6013 and 6033 will be offered in the fall, with 6103 and 6113 coming in the spring. Eco 6013 and 6113 are brand new courses. Of course, those MA students who have started the program under previous catalogs may continue based upon those older catalogs’ plans and simply treat the new courses as potential electives. Other electives available in the fall are International (6323) and Behavioral Economics (6973). Also available to our graduate students are ECO 7053 and 7063, courses in the college’s doctoral program. Undergraduate Program We want remind our undergraduates that revisions in the BA and BBA programs made three years ago continue to make the economics major very flexible. We provide three suggested fields of specialization for both the BA and BBA degree plans with specified courses. However, our economics majors are free to devise their own plans and choose their own list of economics electives beyond the two junior-level required courses – that is, ECO 3033 and 3053 for the BBA and ECO 3013 and 3053 for the BA. Keep this in mind when meeting with your adviser. So, step up to the 2002-04 and 2004-06 catalogs for greater flexibility. Undergraduate Electives We are offering a good selection of electives at the undergraduate level: Mathematical Economics (3113), U.S. Economic History (3183), International (3193), Public Sector Economics (3273), and Chinese Business Culture (4953). Join NABE and ODE The UTSA branch of the National Association of Business Economics will be meeting and recruiting early in the semester. NABE is a registered student organization. Watch for announcements on their bulletin board and on this Web site. Also, Omicron Delta Epsilon, the economics honors society, will be recruiting new members. |
