Department Chairman Ken Weiher presents a lecture on supply and demand to his macroeconomics class.

What is economics all about? Economics studies how individuals, institutions and societies make choices on how to best utilize their resources. Economics provides a logical way of analyzing a variety of personal, public and social issues.

The department boasts 15 full-time faculty members who are committed to excellence in teaching and research. Department members have been honored for their excellence in teaching innovation and research productivity through college and university awards.

Message From the Chair

Kenneth Weiher We in the Department of Economics wish to welcome you back for another semester at UTSA. We have some new faces and some news to report.

Welcome, Dr. Long Liu! Dr. Liu joins our department as an assistant professor and a specialist in econometrics. Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. from the Syracuse University this summer. He already has co-authored an article that was published in the Statistics and Probability Letters in 2007.

Dr. Edgar Ghossoub and his wife, Maya, also recently welcomed a newcomer – son, Kevin. Also on the news front: Dr. Melody Lo was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure last spring. Bravo to all these people for being so productive in a variety of ways.

We also have two new faces teaching graduate classes in our MA program. James Jonas, ranked as one of Texas' top lobbyists, is offering Corporate Government Affairs.

Dr. Gary McWilliams is teaching Health Care Economics and Policy. As the Executive Vice President and Chief Ambulatory Services Officer as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor at UTHSC, Dr. McWilliams brings his real-world experience with the interactions of the health care system and the government and marketplace to the classroom.

News

Graduate Students

Openings are available each semester for economics graduate students to work as teaching assistants and/or research assistants. TA's and RA's typically work twenty hours a week, for $10 an hour, and earn the privilege of paying in-state tuition. Come to the department office (BB 4.01.10) to apply.

Undergraduate Electives

We are offering a good selection of electives at the undergraduate level: Econometrics and Business Forecasting (3123), International Economics (3193), Antitrust and Regulation (3213), Labor Economics (3283), and Economics of Developing Countries (4303).
